IGNORE THE DISARRAY

You’d clutch that book to your chest so tight

if just a slip of your tongue was brought to light.

It won’t wash away all the sins you hide.

You won’t hang if you don’t tip the chair.

You kick the dirt in my face, then call me blind.

I’ve seen the light, it burns my eyes.

If it’s a goddamn sin to live my life, I’ve seen the light.

Just do what you’re told and we will cleanse your soul.

God loves all his children, except the heathens who won’t obey.

Ignore the disarray, just bow your head and pray.

We tell no lies, no deception,

but don’t ask too many questions if they're not the right ones.

We will strip you down of your character and rebuild you in our image.

So, you mumble through a hymn you never cared to learn the words to,

as you look up at your whitewashed messiah.

The doves that used to fly when the belltower chimed

have fallen on the church steps.

Your crucifix has a withered smile.

Ignore the disarray, just bow your head and pray.
